Sorry for the delay on this one. A series of poorly timed events basically landed me in a position of coming home very early in the morning, followed closely by having to wake very early that same morning. During the course of the past two days, I’ve injured two toes, got caught in the cold multiple times, and have had the most agonizing pain in my legs. But was this all worth it for a standalone Star Wars film? Let’s find out together shall we?
Plot Summary - Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) is a loner in hiding, who the rebellion breaks out of imperial prison. She’s taken to their base where it’s revealed that her father Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen) is the lead scientist building a new weapon for the empire. She is tasked to find Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), whose received a message from her father, with the of Rebel Intelligence Officer Cassian Andor (Diego Luna).
Pros - Right of the bat you can tell that it’s trying to deviate itself from the Star Wars norm, but it does it the right way by simply going straight into the story. The setup is beautifully simple, but as the story goes along it manages to become more detailed and elaborate in interesting ways. It explores a lot of new elements of the universe and the lore, and adds some new additions to it as well. The cast is amazing, with Felicity Jones doing a great job being the center of it all. The supporting cast is interesting, and has a lot of great cameos from previously seen Star Wars Characters. The film also definitely looks like Star Wars, again doing a lot to mix both old and new elements in very cool ways.
Cons - You can tell a few times when elements from the older films have been lifted and altered to look like they match the film. There’s also a really high number of hard dark to light transitions that thankfully don’t keep on going throughout the whole film.
Final Score - 10/10
Honestly, no real hard complaints. It’s feels like the right mix of a standalone Star Wars movie that also fits perfectly within the established universe.
Next: Collateral Beauty - Will Smith in a sappy, pretentious looking drama, what could possibly go wrong?
