So before I begin today, I have to give a special shout out to my friend Chris Landry, the man who invited me to come along with him to see the movie. I was actually really looking forward to this one, especially after hearing all the great things about the main cast involved. Plus it’s going to be a slow week this week, so I was happy to have something new to see. So how does the film hold up? Let’s find out together shall we?
Plot Summary - After the death of his brother, Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is made the guardian of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). When he’s forced to return to his hometown to take care of him, he has to deal with the people and the painful memories of why he left.
Pros - They weren’t kidding when they said that the cast was great because they really are. Casey Affleck is giving probably his best performance, and Lucas Hedges does really well as Patrick. The story is greatly told, as you find out as it plays out why Lee left, which I am totally not spoiling because you need to see it yourself trust me. The film looks great, simply deciding to incorporate the natural beauty of the area into the background of every scene. The music is kept to a minimum so that every moment has more impact which makes it more meaningful. The story also pulls no punches, it has it’s tragic moments that it will make you watch, while at the same time balancing it out with humour, most of which is really, surprisingly, dark.
Cons - Michelle Williams as Lee’s ex wife feels underutilized just a touch, I would’ve like to see her more. It also ends on a bit of an anticlimactic moment, plus the film overall can feel unresolved in spots. The unresolved-ness I can forgive because it makes the story actually better, but if that kind of thing bothers you it will here.
Final Score - 9/10
It’ll probably end up as an honourable mention, and I can definitely see oscar nominations coming it’s way as well.
Next - Well, here’s the situation in a nutshell. There are no new movies anywhere near me. Like at all. I have two on the list I could see, I just really don’t want to. So, until I can get an idea of what new film I’m seeing next, I’ve decided the order of priority for the next little while:
- Suggestion Box Reviews
- Films I’ve Missed
- DVD/Retro Reviews
I’ll try to pump these out as best I can. The first one will be a suggestion box review, and also the film that delayed me from starting them because I really did not want to watch it…...Transformers 4: I don’t give a shit about it’s secondary title.
