Double Movie Review: Assassin's Creed (2016) & Passengers (2016)

Hello All,

So remember in my last review when I said I still have a few more films to cover? Yeah, this is going to be the result of that. Hey, at least it means more content for my lovely readers. So let’s get to the first one of these shall we?

Assassin’s Creed Review

Plot Summary - Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) is a criminal, who avoids execution, thanks to the help of Abstergo Industries. Abstergo Lead Scientist Sophia Rikkin (Marion Cotillard) tells him that Abstergo is a front for the Templar Order, who need the memories of his assassin ancestor that are stored in his mind, to find a great treasure that will allow them to end the violence across the world.

Pros - The film is greatly cast, especially the main three characters. The scenes inside the Animus are great action scenes, and the film overall is got a really cool visual style.

Cons - It’s really hard to explain exactly why I don’t like this film. The plot feels crowded, especially in both sides characters and what’s going on in the story. It also doesn’t help that the only part of the story that feels coherent is not exactly compelling. Callum is only given a small explanation for his actions, albeit an important explanation, but the reason he changes his mind is not really explained very well. The key selling point of the film, the scenes as the Assassin, are treated as only action scenes to pad the plot. You see a couple of key references to skills in the game, but not much else in terms of story.

Final Score - 2/10

I really, really, really wanted to give a 4, a just under average, but truthfully, it’s not a great film by a wide margin of problems. If they do a sequel, they have great potential to go into an era the previous games haven’t covered yet.

Passengers Review

Plot Summary - Aboard the Starship Avalon, Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) awakens from a 120 year hibernation 90 years too soon. Soon after, Aurora Lane (Jennifer Lawrence) is awoken from hibernation as well. Together, they must learn to make life on the ship function, as well as figure out what is causing the ship to malfunction along the way as well.

Pros - Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence work together really well. The look of the film is really cool as well, as it does a great job of capturing the multiple types of moods seen throughout the film. Martin Sheen as the android bartender shines as well in his small role. It also does a great job of setting up a pretty cool world around it even without us seeing much of it.

Cons - Okay, without trying my best to spoil it, basically, a key moment to the film is basically given a rather…..let’s say unfortunate subtext that can’t help but linger throughout the film. It doesn’t help that it drags down the rest of the cliched plot with it. That’s the best I can describe it without spoilers, and that’s where I’m going to leave it.

Final Score - 5/10

So, as much as I wanted to give Assassin’s Creed a higher score because I wanted to like it more, I’m sticking with a 5 for Passengers simply because as much as that one aspect bugged me, my friend I saw it with was himself able to overlook it and enjoy the film more than I did. So, in this case, I’m going with this score as basically a way for me to say I didn’t like it, but you might like it more than me.

Next: Why Him? - Okay so it’s not a double (thankfully), but I do have to ask: Why does it have to be this movie next?
