Hello All,
It’s late at night, and I’m tired and want to go to bed. So let’s just get to it shall we?
Sing Review
Plot Summary - When theatre owner Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) realizes his business is failing, he decides to hold an amateur singing competition to revitalize it. However, when a typo on the flyer proclaims the prize to be $100,000 dollars, he finds himself with more problems than he ever imagined.
Pros - The voice cast is actually pretty great in this, my favourite being Seth Macfarlane as a Frank Sinatra type singing mouse. The soundtrack is definitely better than I expected, as it’s mixture of new and old, instead of the usual doldrums of modern pop crap they churn out for these types of things usually (reading that back I realize how old I sound, what is wrong with me?) The animation is illuminations usual fair, pretty good without being overwhelming.
Cons - The main plot and character subplots are not exactly inspired, although there are a couple that variate from the kids movie norm so it’s more like a partial complaint.
Final Score - 6/10
It’s overall harmless fluff that I’d say see it when you can.
Lion Review
Plot Summary - Saroo Brierley (Dev Patel) is an Indian man, raised by an Australian family, after getting lost at the age of five. When he starts having flashbacks to his childhood, he uses google earth to find his way back home.
Pros - The cast is stellar, especially Dev Patel as Saroo. The film does a great job by actually taking the first hour of the film, and dedicating it to telling the story of how Saroo got lost from his home in the first place. The rest of the supporting cast is great as well, and the film makes great work at bringing with it some amazing cinematography. There are also quite a few emotional moments as well in the film.
Cons - At 2 hours long, the film does suffer from scenes of padding, mostly in terms of stuff that affects the people around him that doesn’t really lend to the plot in any way. There’s also a sequence of him moping around that’s a touch too long as well. Also the way he finds home in the movie, while overall accurate to the true story, feels like a bit of a got lucky moment.
Final Score - 8/10
Definitely better than expected, I’d say see it sooner rather than later.
Next: Why Him? - For real this time I promise.
