Christmas Special Double Review: La La Land (2016) and Fences (2016)

Hello All,

I hope you’re all genuinely enjoying your day today. As a gift for you (and me because that means I’m almost done all the films for this year around here), I’ve gotten the chance to see two of the bigger films getting a lot of buzz. I am of course talking about the musical La La Land, and the play adaptation Fences (Obviously, I mean, hopefully people read these titles. I spend literally minutes on them.) I forgot where I was going with this, so let’s just get this review started shall we?

La La Land Review

Plot Summary - Set in modern day Los Angeles, our story finds struggling actress Mia (Emma Stone) meeting and falling in love with jazz pianist Sebastian (Ryan Gosling). As they both try and realize their dreams, they find that it might cost them their love along the way.

Pros - I gotta be honest, I simply love everything about this film. As I write this, I’m listening to the soundtrack, which is amazing. It’s all original songs, and every single one of them were entertaining. The casting is spot on, with both Emma and Ryan doing all their own singing and dancing, and Ryan also plays the piano as well, and they nail all of it. The cinematography and overall look of the film is simply gorgeous, as it has a huge range of colour palettes in every scene. The direction is amazing, as the film never ever has a dull moment even in between songs. Honestly, as someone who usually doesn’t like musicals, this one was freaking amazing.

Cons -.....It’s been awhile since I’ve done this, I got no complaints.

Final Score - 10/10

It’s honestly an amazing film. I highly recommend when it hits wider release that you go and see it asap.

Fences Review

Plot Summary - Adapted from the play of the same name, the story follows Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) and his family, as they go through life in 1950’s Pittsburgh. (This is the most concise way I can summarize it without going into a long paragraph.)

Pros - The cast is great, especially since most of them have had previous experience performing the stage version of it before. Denzel does a great job directing it as well, and the film manages to come with an insane amount of emotional moments and drama with it as well.

Cons - The film is 2h 20m, which is fine it has a lot of ground to cover, but it’s a heavy dialogue type of movie. So if you don’t like long talk pieces, you’ll bored to tears. The ending is also slightly weird to me, but it’s mostly because I think it works better on the stage than in the film.

Final Score - 9/10

It's a great film, if a touch long. If you feel like you'll be up for it, definitely see it.

Next: The Autopsy of Jane Doe (maybe....depends on time, if you have me on twitter (link below) I'll update there on what happens with that.)
