Hello All,
So when we last left Gamera, he had been sent to mars at the end of previous film. Yeah, sorry for the spoiler alert for the end of a 52 year old film, but I say watch it anyways. So, where do we go from here? Let’s find out together shall we?
Plot Summary - Set six months after the first film, Gamera is freed after his rocket to mars collides with a meteorite. He returns to earth, attacks a dam, and then quickly disappears. About a month after, three men travel to the jungles of New Guinea in search of a large opal. When they find it however, one betrays the others, letting one die and leaving the other for dead, taking the opal for himself. When the natives find the survivor, they inform that the opal is actually the egg of Barugon, and when the egg is accidentally irradiated, it grows to monstrous size, attracting Gamera to it, and bringing the two of them to blows.
Pros - So as you can tell by the length of the summary, the film has way more to offer in terms of the story. At 100 minutes, it actually manages to tell a pretty interesting narrative about greed, and what it does to people. It also just happens to have kaiju monsters in it, and while Gamera is awesome in it, Barugon might have the greatest power I have seen so far in any Kaiju movie: He shoots a rainbow beam from his back that vaporizes almost anything it touches. If you don’t think that’s awesome, there’s something wrong with you.
Cons - Gamera and Barugon admittedly have only two brief fights together, and as awesome as they are, I wish they were a bit longer. There’s also a few continuity gaps, mostly just a few instances of people finding out things offscreen that we never find out how. The story does a few predictable moments as well, but it’s all likeable enough that it really doesn’t take away from it too much.
Final Score - 9/10
Honestly, I know I’m only two films in, but this one is the better of them so far. A huge improvement over the first film, and a definite recommendation from me.
Next in the Series: Gamera returns to take on Gyaos, the giant flying bat.
Next Movie Review: The Fate of the Furious - The biggest film of April, expect that on Thursday night.
