Movie Review: Going in Style (2017)

Hello All,

It’s the week before one of the biggest releases of the year, so admittedly our pickings this week are going to be a bit slim. Expect a lot of limited releases, foreign films, and some helpings from my personal dvd collection with the Gamera film series I’m reviewing as well (link to the first film’s review down below HINT HINT HINT!) So let’s knock this one out of the way fairly quickly shall we?

Plot Summary - When former steelworker Joe (Michael Caine) is a first hand witness to a bank robbery, he decides to follow suit when his pension fund is depleted, and recruits his two oldest friends to help him.

Pros - The trio of Caine, Freeman, and Morgan, are great together and are easily the best things about the film. They get quite a few jokes in there that also don’t feel like the same, easy gags, about their age and related matters.

Cons - The story, while well told, kind of plays it on the safe side. The story has the predictable moments, and while I admit I was thrown through a couple of loops, one of them was in hindsight more obvious than I realized. There’s also a key moment later on in the film that, again, feels like it was played a bit too safe for my liking.

Final Score - 6/10

The three leads do make up for a lot of the flaws, and if you’re looking for some light hearted fun, you could do worse than this.

Bonus Fact: I just learned this while writing this review, apparently this is a remake of a 1979 film of the same name. I should really add that to my watch list for a slow day.

Next: Suggestion Box Review - For real this time, my health has gone up a bit so I’m game to do it.
