Suggestion Box Review: Come and See (1985)

Hello All,

Before we begin, I’m accepting suggestions for my upcoming 300th review here: http://freesuggestionbox.com/pub/uhrevfz. So if you have any ideas on what I should do, you should let me know.

Oh boy, we got a doozy on our hands today. My knowledge of Russian films is limited to Nightwatch and Daywatch, and that’s roughly it. If I’ve watched any other Russian films, I did it unknowingly. Those two were at least released after the fall of the Berlin wall, while Come and See was made in the tail days of communism. So this is a genre that I’m way out of my element with. It’s also a film about World War Two, so you know it’s going to be nothing but a real barrel of laughs. So how is this first foray into this genre? Let’s find out together shall we?

Plot Summary - in 1943, a Belorussian boy named Florya (Aleksey Kravchenko) finds a rifle on a beach, and decides to join the Soviet partisan forces. However, he soons find himself deep into the war, and begins to witness it’s true horrors first hand.

Pros - Honestly, this is a brutal, yet beautiful movie. It’s just one of the most intense war films I’ve ever seen. Instead of focusing on battles and the glory, it instead forces on the horrors that were inflicted on the innocent civilians caught in the crossfire. Aleksey as Florya gives an intensely emotional performance that manages to draw you into every moment he’s on screen. It’s also amazingly well shot, with some of the most haunting imagery you’ll ever see. It reminds me a lot of silence in just how intense it is.

Cons - If you’re not a fan of brutal war film, stay the hell away from it. That is all.

Final Score: 10/10

Silence is the best comparison to this, and if you liked that, you’ll like this one as well.

Next Suggestion Box Review: Nightmare Before Christmas - I don’t know why, but sure why not?

Next Movie Review: The Devotion of Suspect X & Your Name - We’re going keep going down the foreign film line, next time with asian films.

I’d like to thank Soviet Movies Online for basically having this film in their library for me to watch for free. If you want to check out their website you can do that here: http://sovietmoviesonline.com/en/
