Suggestion Box Review: Girls Und Panzer Der Film (2015)

Hello All,

So, I find myself finally catching up on my suggestion box reviews (thank god) and let’s just say this one has been in the back of my mind for a while. Mostly in terms of how to approach this. My knowledge of anime is limited, but I have watched what I think is a fair amount to say that I’m a mild fan. (If anyone’s wondering, my favourite anime is Afro Samurai, both the tv series and the follow up movie. Maybe I’ll review those one day, who knows?) Anyways, going into this, since I didn’t know anything about the show Girls und Panzer before it, and didn’t have the time to watch it, I decided to go in blind. I’m taking the approach of someone who is seeing this movie knowing nothing else around it, and judging it from there? So how well did this blind viewing test go? Let’s find out together shall we?

Plot Summary - After finding out that that they’re school is being closed, the students of Oarai Girls High School manage to bargain their way into a fight against the team of the government's choosing, using the best weapons at their disposal, world war 2 era tanks.

I did not make any of that up.

Pros - The tanks battles are actually well animated and admittedly interesting to watch. They go all out for them, allowing them to roam through cities, forests, and at one point even an amusement park. The animation is great as well, even managing to throw in some first person perspectives as well during some of the fighting.

Cons - How best to organize this? Let’s start from the easiest to explain. Going into this without knowing the source material is a huge mistake, because it just throws you straight in with no real chance to learn anything. You’ll be sitting there asking about the most basic concepts of what’s going on and get at best a partial answer. There’s too many characters also, and the story itself (even removing the tanks) is just the usual rallying together to save the (insert treasured building here) story that was big in the 80’s.

Final Score - 4/10* - *I do this for people who don’t know the show. Unless you’re big on tanks, anime, or japanese high school shows, then it’s a super hard pass. Fans of the show will like it, and if you think you might want to watch the show first before the film, I definitely recommend doing that.

Next Suggestion: Come and See (1985) - A soviet era world war 2 film, sounds like a real barrel of laughs.
