Suggestion Box #4: The Bourne Identity (2002)

Hello All,

So this was originally suggested to me back when the last Bourne movie was coming out, but since The Great Wall is coming out next week, I figure now’s a good time to fulfill this request. For those of you who don’t know, The Great Wall is an upcoming film that has Matt Damon’s character in China fighting off monsters along the border of said Great Wall. Since Bourne Identity was Damon’s first real action film, what better film to look back on than this one? So does the first film still hold up fifteen years later? Let’s find out together shall we?

Plot Summary - After being found floating in the ocean with no memories of anything before hand, Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) tries to figure his identity, along the way uncovering sinister clues about his past.

Pros - The story is easily my favourite thing about the film. Amnesia plots can usually be very hit or miss, but they play the film just slow enough that you can really watch the pieces start to fall in place, yet they still manage to keep it interesting at the same time. Matt Damon is awesome as Bourne, and the supporting cast, while various, still manage to each turn in good performances, including a really good effort from Clive Owen as another agent. The action scenes are also simple yet effective, and serve to keep the film moving in an interesting, if slightly padded manor.

Cons - The third act has this kind of rough tonal shift going into it, and the actual ending itself leaves you with a few questions, so if that kind of thing annoys you then be prepared for it. The film also does jump around a lot as well.

Final Score - 8/10

To me, It’s still a really solid, if slightly flawed, film. If the requests are there I will do the rest of the series I haven’t already done.

Next Suggestion Box Review: Spaceballs - Really looking forward to this one. As for new releases, not quite sure yet so stay tuned.
