Hello All,
With January now very firmly behind us, we’ve reached one of the first weekends that I’ve been very excited for film wise. Sure it’s a sequel heavy weekend, but when those films are John Wick 2 (the first one made my top ten best list back in 2014), and the spinoff (and subject of this review) The Lego Batman Movie, how can you be not excited? I have the strange feeling I’m forgetting something though, but it probably wasn’t worth mentioning anyways. So how was the return to world of plastic bricks? Let’s find out together shall we?
Plot Summary - During a mission to save Gotham City, Batman (Will Arnett) tells the Joker (Zach Galifianakis) that he is not that important to him in his life, causing Joker to make the ultimate plan to defeat Batman once and for all.
Pros - The voice cast is actually amazing, and Will Arnett is perfect as this type of Batman. The film also has a lot of sentimentality with it as well, as it actually does a great deal of going more into Batman’s character and even has him dealing with some really deeply held feelings as well. It does this without feeling like it’s cheapening the character, and it balances out with the humour of the film well. The story does feel more like a comic book style story, and is actually pretty well thought out structurally as well. Of course the lego mixed with the CG animation is great as well. For lego people, they really do get a good amount of emotion and movement on the characters without it looking or feeling out of place.
Cons - The film does feel a tad short at 104 minutes. The film has has this weird thing where a few of the jokes don’t necessarily fall flat as much as they just kind of half work. Like it’s funny, but they either go on too long, or are just more of a chuckle moment. They also have some cliche moments, and they true lesson Batman learns is kind of harped on a touch too much in my opinion.
Final Score - 9/10
Even with the, admittedly longer than planned cons section, I still really enjoyed this movie. It’s fast, fun, and a definite recommend to anyone.
Next: John Wick Chapter 2 - Trying for tomorrow with this one. Still can’t recall if there was a third film out this weekend, so I’ll probably try to hardcore catch up on Suggestion box reviews. I have some work to do before that though, might also try and squeeze in something for Valentine’s day I don’t know, stay tuned.
