Movie Review: Rings (2017)

Hello All,

So now we complete the trilogy, and boy what a strange journey it’s been. We went from really good to complete shit and now…...we’re here. We’re at the third film, the film that didn’t get screened for critics and got pushed back twice. I really don’t know what else to say at this point, so let’s get to it shall we?

Plot Summary - 13 years after the events of The Ring 2, Julia (Matilda Lutz) goes off to her boyfriend’s college to try and find him, and when she gets there, finds out that he’s involved in a group trying to study the tape. When she watches it to save him and sees different footage than everyone else, they set off to try and find out the new mystery.

Pros - I’ll give it this, it’s more cohesive story wise than the last one. It’s also got Vincent D'Onofrio in a really cool supporting role. The story is kind of cool as it plays out more like the first one in terms of it being more of a mystery film, and it also does a slightly better job at adding some more to the lore of the world.

Cons - It’s lacks any real scares, and while the film does add some cool elements to the lore, it also kind of contradicts itself in the origin story at the same time. The acting is nothing to write home about from anyone else, and the use of jump scares in a series that used to rely on tension and atmosphere is a real goddamn shame. I also cannot deny the boredom I felt through most of the film.

Final Score - 3/10

It was almost a 4, but it’s honestly just not a good film. It’s technically competent, but unfortunately it’s just not that interesting on it’s own merits, while also contradicting the other films in the series.

Next: Jackie - So this finally came out near me, and I’m pretty excited to go see it.
