Hello All,
So at this point we’ve reached halfway through this batch Gamera movies (yes there are more, we’ll get to that), and it’s also at this point where we begin to notice a little bit of a tonal change in the series. Yes, Gamera VS Viras is the first in the series to basically play itself as a kids film. Gamera has a theme song, he’s referred to as the friend of all children, and the two main characters are both children. So how does this change in tone do for the film? Let’s find out together shall we?
Plot Summary - When an alien ship attacks earth, and brainwashes Gamera, a pair of boy scouts must stop the invaders, free Gamera, and then help him fight of the alien Viras.
Pros - The effects are still pretty cool, even for 1968. The cast is actually great as well, including the main american child (yes really) who I’m convinced can speak Japanese effortlessly, which is a lot more effort than most of these movies go through in that regard. The fight with Viras at the end is cool, and while this is basically a kids film, they really don't feel the need to dumb down the severity of the situation.
Cons - For an 82 minute movie, there’s about ten to twelve minutes or so of re used footage from the previous movies. There’s also a couple of logic gaps here and there as well.
Final Score - 7/10
Honestly though, so far it’s the second best one I’ve seen. Sure it’s a bit corny and silly, but it holds up as a Kaiju film for kids that most people can enjoy as well.
Next in the Series: Gamera VS Guiron - Gamera goes into space to rescue to kids from alien invaders, however he must fight Guiron, the giant ginsu knife.
Next Review: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - Obviously.
