Movie Review: Underworld Blood Wars (2017)

Hello All,

I’m going to try and keep this one short, as I have an early day ahead of me tomorrow, and I’m already up quite late. I will say having seen all the Underworld movies, it is surprising to see that they intend to keep the franchise going. Not they’re necessarily bad movies, but they’re also not setting the bar fairly high. So how does the fifth in the franchise do as a result? Let’s find out together shall we?

Plot Summary - Selene (Kate Beckinsale) now finds herself on the run from both Vampires and Lycans, but when one of the last remaining covens offers her clemency in exchange for her help against a new lycan threat, she finds herself drawn back into the centuries old war.

Pros - Kate Beckinsale as per usual with this franchise is easily the best thing about the movie. It’s clear she’s very invested in the character of Selene, and she does the role well. Theo James is back from the last installment and he does okay in the film as well. The action scenes are pretty awesome as well, and they bring in some new ideas to the lore of the franchise as well. The plot is interesting at points, and adds some interesting turns in the story as well.

Cons - That being said, there are some parts of the plot that are either greatly underexplored, underutilized, or under explained. The rest of the side characters are between okay and forgettable, there are also a few kind of weird moments in the film that feel either out of place or just weird in general.

Final Score - 5*

*If you’re a fan of the franchise in any capacity, otherwise I’d recommend watching from the beginning and going from there if interested. Yes there is a backstory monologue in the beginning but it really doesn't do it justice. Otherwise, if you have no interest, it won’t win you over.

Look, the franchise as a whole is basically dumb entertainment. It cools action scenes surrounded by plots that go in and out as they want.

Next: Silence & A Monster Calls - I have a long day ahead of me tomorrow.
