Movie Review Special: My Most Anticipated Films of 2017

Hello All,

Yeah, so this week is turning out to be busier than expected for me, and since I’m trying to get back into my reviewing groove, we’re going to make a new list for this year. We’re going to take a moment and look at ten films that, to be fairly honest, I really want to see. So this list is more self indulgence for me, but it also gives folks a chance to maybe learn about some films they might not know are coming out. I was originally going to limit this to ten, but, fuck it, let’s have a bit of fun with this shall we? I will say, I’m skipping January mostly because of time, and I’m only talking about films I think are going to be interesting in one way or another. We’ll go in order of release date (as of writing this, shit can still change) starting with…..

The LEGO Batman Movie (Feb. 10th)
The spinoff of The Lego Movie that we didn’t we wanted until we were told we were getting it, It’s got Will Arnett coming back as Batman, and it gives us a Robin in Michael Cera to boot. Honestly it looks hilarious, and after all the doom and gloom DC has given us with Batman over the past few years, I for one am looking forward to a nice light hearted release.

John Wick: Chapter 2 (Feb. 10th)
John Wick was awesome simply because it did it’s one very simple thing extremely right: They gave Keanu Reeves a gun, and told him to kill everyone. I’m worried the sequel might make all the usual missteps they tend to do, but I’m holding out hope for this one.

Logan (Mar. 3rd)
The final film with Hugh Jackman in the role, it’s tackling a recent, yet well received, story from the comics. With an R rating, it looks like we’re getting an awesome last ride for Wolverine.

Kong: Skull Island (Mar. 10th)
From the producers of the most recent American Godzilla, this one looks to correct the mistakes of its predecessor in terms of presentation, and it’s going to lead into the next film, a remake of King King VS. Godzilla. What can I say? I got a soft spot for giant monsters.

Power Rangers (Mar. 24th)
This one’s here mostly because I was a fan of the original american show growing up. It’s looking at a dark, gritty reboot, but honestly as long as they don’t go overboard, I think it has a decent chance.

Ghost in the Shell (Mar. 31st)
A live action remake of a classic anime film, if you can get over who's playing the lead (and you should, literally no one cares) it looks like it’ll be a cool film. It also might get people to watch the original for the first time, myself included (which I might now that I think about.)

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (May. 5th)
This one was my favourite film of 2014, and this one looks to be more epic and awesome than it. What can I say except….Obviously.

King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword (May. 12th)
Guy Ritchie’s long in development King Arthur movie, aside from the obvious jokes, might make for a fun adventure movie, and a new take on a worn story.

Alien: Covenant (May. 19th)
Prometheus was a let down for a lot of us, and with Ridley Scott returning to the franchise's roots and Michael Fassbender returning, this one looks like it’ll get the series it’s momentum back.

Captain Underpants (Jun. 2nd)
I was a huge fan of the books when I was a kid, and the fact that it’s animated instead of live action just makes it seem all the better. (Yes I’m aware that Wonder Woman also comes out this same week, I just don’t think it looks good. I said it, Fight me.)

The Mummy (2017) Jun. 9th
The first film in the new Universal Monster Movie Universe (I don’t know what the short hand for it is), it finds Tom Cruise taking on a mystical Mummy, and honestly, I’m curious to see how he’ll do in the film.

Spiderman: Homecoming (Jul. 7th)
The film I’m easily the most excited for, the MCU Spiderman was a huge highlight of Civil War for me, and the fact that he’s finally back in the loving hands of Marvel (hence the secondary title), it’s got my inner fanboy all fired up in anticipation.

War for the Planet of the Apes (Jul. 14th)
The next chapter in the phenomenal Planet of the Apes reboot franchise, Woody Harrelson makes a villainous turn as a general hoping to stop Caesar once and for all.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (Jul. 21st)

Dunkirk (Jul. 21st)
Christopher Nolan’s take on one of the biggest moments of World War II, I honestly think this has potential to be one of the best films of this year.

The Dark Tower (Jul. 28th)
Another long in development film, this one of the Stephen King epic, it looks like it’s going to be a pretty solid adaptation, and if the buzz around it is to be believed, we could be in for quite an epic film.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Oct. 6th)
A sequel to the surprise Kingsman film, this one looks like it’ll bring back the cast who survived the first film, and maybe even a little bit more.

Cloverfield 2017 (Working Title) (Oct. 27th)
Another sequel set in the Cloverfield universe, this one sees astronauts stranded in space, after an accident causes them to no longer be able to see the earth,

Thor: Ragnarok (Nov. 3rd)
The third in the Thor movies, it finds Thor, The Hulk, Loki, and Dr. Strange trying to find Odin, who has been lost on earth.

Justice League (Nov. 17th)
I debated leaving this off of the list, but I admit I’m more curious as to how bad it’ll be versus how good it’ll be.

Star Wars Episode VIII (Dec. 15th)
The next chapter of the main Star Wars story, and Luke Skywalker is actually going to speak in this one, I’m sold already.

Jumanji (2017) Dec. 22nd
A sequel to the beloved Robin Williams classic, this one finds four kids drawn into a videogame version of Jumanji, trapped in the bodies of their virtual avatars.

And there we have it folks, my most anticipated films of the year. So how many will be good, bad, or in between? We’ll have to wait and see.

Next: A Monster Calls (Hopefully) - I’m going to try and see this tomorrow, mostly because I’m really looking forward to it, and because I want to get started on new reviews.
