Movie Review: Patriots Day (2017)

Hello All,

You gotta love true event stories. Artistic interpretations of real events is always a bit of a hot topic in filmmaking. It brings up questions like, what do you take out? what do you leave in? what do you change? Who do you change? It’s stuff like this that could potentially ruin a film before it even gets out of the gate? On top of all that, the film still has to maintain that one solid principle of being entertaining. So how does Patriot's Day do in regards to this very delicate balance? Let’s find out together shall we?

Plot Summary - The story follows the police officers at the heart of the investigation into the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing.

Pros - The cast is solid, especially Wahlberg giving it his all. The story is great in that it doesn’t just follow Wahlberg, it gives many of the main people involved their own scenes, and even follows some of the victims of both the bombing, and subsequent events as well. I did some reading up on it, and the movie for the most part seems fairly accurate with its recounting of the events that unfolded. The film also does a good job of trying to cover everything from all sides, even showing you the brothers as they plan everything.

Cons - It’s clear that, as interesting as they are, the subplots are there to kind of pad the runtime a bit. If you’re also not a fan of the feel good ‘good vs evil’ type of story then this won’t appeal to you at all.

Final Score - 8/10

Overall, it’s an okay watch. It’s not really overbearing, and it’s well made, so I definitely recommend it.

Next: Long Way North - There’s a solid chance you’ve never heard of this film, so I’m going to bring it to your attention.
