Suggestion Box Review: Perfect (1985)

Hello All,

So, I’m basically writing this as the movie is playing. I can’t remember if it’s the second or third music montage, but it’s the gym photo shoot montage for anyone who's seen the movie. Knowing pretty much where the rest of this is going, I’m writing this during the movie to save some time. To be fair, I’m only posting it once the movie is over. I’ll be honest, but my hopes are buried at this point. So let’s get through this shall we?

Plot Summary - While chasing a bigger story, reporter Adam Lawrence (John Travolta) decides to write a second story about health clubs being the single’s bars of the 80’s, and begins to date aerobics instructor Jessie Wilson (Jamie Lee Curtis.)

Pros - If you’re a fan of everything 80’s this movie is for you.

Cons - This movie is relentlessly dull. It’s fluffy, nonsense padding, stretching itself to just under two hours of my life I’m never getting back. The characters are idiots, making the same poor choices over and over, and we’re just supposed to sit there and think it’s funny, charming, or romantic, when it’s so painfully fails at being any of them?

Final Score - 1/10

If you can tolerate the worst of the 80’s self indulgence, then go right ahead. I never want to watch this piece of shit again.

Next: Coco & Roman J. Israel Esq, - Yeah I’m playing catch up a bit, mostly because here will be a lot coming out in the next few weeks.

Double Movie Review: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) & My Friend Dahmer (2017)

Hello All,
Sorry for the lengthy gap, I’ve been dealing with a lot lately. I’m going to keep this short because of that. So let’s get to it shall we?

Three Billboards Review

Plot Summary - Seven months after her daughter’s murder, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) puts up three billboards asking why it hasn’t been solved, stirring up the emotions of the small town in the process.

Pros - The cast is phenomenal, as they bring they very well written characters to life. The story is kept interesting, and the dark humour is mostly well timed and executed.

Cons - It is a very non traditional movie, but the thing is worth it’s weight in gold because of that.

Final Score - 10/10

Probably one of the better films I’ve seen this year. Go see it, if you can.

My friend Dahmer review

Plot Summary - Following the story of Jeffrey Dahmer (Ross Lynch) through the eyes of his high school friend known as Derf (Alex Rolff).

Pros -     Lynch basically owns this movie, as he brings a very manic yet sympathetic version of dahmer to the big screen. The story plays out well for the most part, and it’s a tense film to sit through.

Cons - Most of the side characters are forgettable, and the film feels like it drags on a touch too long.

Final Score - 8/10

It’s a fascinating watch, but it’s not for everyone.

Next: Perfect - I’m going to try and commit to the new thursday night idea.

Movie Review: Lady Bird (2017)

Hello All,

I’m exhausted, I don’t know when the next review will be, or of what, so let’s just do this shall we?

Plot Summary - Following the 2002 - 2003 school year of the self named Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan) as she deals with life and applying to college.

Pros - Overall the film is quite well done. It follows my most simple winning formula of a good story well told, and it does it damn near perfectly. The cast is great, the story feels grounded, and as lazy as this might sound it honestly just works.

Cons - My only real complaint is how much the timeline seems to jump around in consistently. Not enough to get lost in, just enough to notice it.

Final Score - 10/10

This basically met my expectations. If great coming of age films are your thing, go see it.

Next: Coco - Or a suggestion box review. Don’t really know anymore. I promise to try and get back on track, it’s just a hectic time of year.

Movie Review: Justice League (2017)

Hello All,

I’m going to keep this one short, suffice to say though, I think we all waited for this one without holding our breaths, but at least hopeful after wonder woman pretty much exceeded a lot of expectations. So with that bumpy track record in mind, how did the league fair? Let’s find out together shall we?

Plot Summary - When a new threat looming, and no superman to defend them, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) decides to form a team of new heroes in order to stop it.

Pros - Affleck and Gadot as their respective heroes are great, the action scenes are cool and coherent, and it’s admittedly great to see the team altogether on the bigscreen. The humour throughout is also a welcomed addition to the film as well.

Cons - The new characters do not get enough time to develop, the villain is lame, the plot is not super interesting, and while I’m not a big fan of the last son of krypton, the way he gets brought into the movie (it’s so not a spoiler by the way they’ve basically been spoiling that for months) is questionable, and once again Lois Lane is barely used in the movie. I know she’s not related heavily to the justice league, but still if Dr. Strange can get a short but memorable cameo in a movie that’s not really his why can’t Lois Lane catch a goddamn break?

Final Score - 6/10

But you know what? I haven’t done of these yet this year (I don’t think), so what the hell: Justice League gets the lower score seal of approval. Because we can all use a bit of a break from the negativity nowadays.

Next: Lady Bird - That’s tomorrow, then I will do the suggestion box review of perfect (1985) after.

Double Movie Review: Pokemon the Movie I Choose You (2017) & Murder on the Orient Express (2017)

Hello All,

We’re back, sort of. Well I am, it’s just that it’s looking like the rest of the year will probably be shit and I’m more than willing to throw in the towel if it gets any worse. Vacation went well by the way, totally an unrelated statement. Let us do this thing shall we?

Pokemon Review (It’s a long title cut me a break.)

Plot Summary - Re-imagining the first season of the hit tv series, the film relives Ash Ketchum’s adventures with his very first pokemon Pikachu.

Pros - The animation is a great improvement since my last venture into the series, and it was cool to relive some of the better plot points from the season I watched as a kid.

Cons - I think the nostalgia factor for me with the animated series has worn thinner than expected, because I found this more tolerable than entertaining. The newer additions didn’t help much either, especially the new sidekicks who replace brock and misty but are just shallow copycats of those same characters. What was even the point of it then?

Final Score - 5/10

Only for active fans of the series. Everyone else is better off without.

Murder on the Orient Express Review

Plot Summary - While aboard the famous Orient Express, Detective Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) must solve the murder of a high profile gangster.

Pros - Branagh is fine as Poirot, and the setting is good looking and quite various throughout.

Cons - The rest of the cast feel like caricatures rather than characters, and the film seems more comfortable telling the story rather than showing it.

Final Score - 5/10

It’s a slow weekend folks, look for better movies. Go see Thor.

Next: Perfect (1985) - That’s right folks, I want to do suggestion box reviews. Lord knows I need a change of pace.

Movie Review: The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)

Hello All,

I haven’t really checked yet, but there’s a good chance that this might be either the last or second last review of my vacation, depending on how it goes. Anyways, I have an early day ahead of me so without further ado, let’s review this thing shall we?

Plot Summary - Steven Murphy (Colin Farrell) is a surgeon who is mentoring a young man named Martin (Barry Keoghan), the son of a former patient who died on the operating table. When his kids start to become inexplicably ill, Martin reveals a terrifying secret that leaves Steven to face a terrible decision.

Pros - The thing that stood out the most, was strangely the music. The film opens with this operatic like atmosphere and just doesn’t let up from there. The cast does fantastically well, all the while keeping up the intensity perfectly. The story evolves in a strange way but doesn’t repel by doing in, instead drawing you in and allowing a good amount of curiosity to build up in your system before hitting you with that next reveal.  Keoghan by the way owns this fucking movie, being the best thing about it.

Cons - The dialogue works for the most part, but it can’t help but come across as a bit too cold at times, especially with some of the more….uncomfortable things mentioned in the movie. The film is also arthouse horror at it’s finest so if that doesn’t sound like a fun evening for you you’re probably going to be right.

Final Score - 9/10

If too cold and artsy isn’t your taste, stay away. Otherwise, if you’re feeling up to a jump scare light good time take the chance.

Next: Murder on the Orient Express or Pokemon the Movie - Haven’t quite decided yet.

Also expect more suggestion box reviews, the end of the gamera series, and a brand new series of reviews. I am also pleased to announce that not only will the year end top tens make their return next month, but we are now adding a fourth brand new end of year review. Of what you might ask? You’ll have to stay tuned to find out. There’s a reboot joke in there somewhere, that’s also not what’s happening. Just keep an ear to the ground.

Movie Review: Thor Ragnarok (2017)

Hello All,

Another vacation review, but this time it’s for probably one of the better reviewed movies so far this year. It’s actually been a great year for superhero movies (Don’t fuck that up Justice League (I said it fight me)), but does Thor really live up to the hype? Let’s find out together shall we?

Plot Summary - When the goddess of death Hela (Cate Blanchett) returns to rule over Asgard, she casts Thor (Chris Hemsworth) out, leading him to a gladiator planet where he is captured and enslaved. With Asgard facing annihilation, he must team up with old friends, enemies, and new allies in order to prevent Ragnarok.

Pros - This is easily the best film of the Thor trilogy. Finally dropping the much more serious tone of the previous films, it actually manages to turn itself out into being quite the light hearted, colourful, and hilarious film. Hemsworth ups Thor’s personality greatly, and it’s nice to see Loki and Hulk having significant roles. Hela is a tremendous villain, Valkyrie is a terrific hero, and the rest of the side characters all have their significant moments as well, without them feeling forced or overwhelming to the story. The shorter length also happens to help the story flow smoothly as well.

Cons - Because of that shorter length, the setup for the film can seem a touch rushed, so be prepared to head in quickly. For Dr. Strange fans, while his time in the film is great, it’s super limited as well. The constant bombardment of jokes in the film might make it seem like a guardians vol. 1 clone to some as well.

Final Score - 10/10

A few minor complaints doesn’t spoil what is ultimately a really good fucking movie. Geez, my year end top ten list is looking more and more challenging to fill out now.

Next: Once again, not sure - Once I’m back on a more regular schedule I’ll have a better idea.

Movie Review: Thank You for Your Service (2017)

Hello All,

Welcome to my vacation. I have some late night down time, so let’s get a review done shall we?

Plot Summary - Based on the true story of Staff Sergeant Adam Schumann (Miles Teller) and his experiences after coming home from Iraq.

Pros - The cast are great, and the story is told in a true mixture of both heartbreak and heroism.

Cons - That being said, trying to condense so much down into a less than two hour film, it leaves certain parts of the story without a proper emotional impact.

Final Score - 8/10

It’s a great film, one that could’ve been better, but does a the job well with what it has.

Next: Not Sure - Great thing about vacations is sometimes, you can just wing it.

Double Movie Review: Suburbicon (2017) & Only the Brave (2017) + Spirited Away (2001) Review

Hello All,

I have a lot to cover and a vacation to start so let’s get to it shall we?

Suburbicon Review

Plot Summary - When his wife is murdered by thugs, Gardner Lodge (Matt Damon) finds his world beginning to unravel as he finds worlds colliding and plans falling apart.

Pros - The cast and director are great, and there is an interesting message in it’s story.

Cons - Admittedly that idea gets lost in translation, as the whole film feels like it should be working, and yet it doesn’t. It doesn’t help that it’s painfully unfunny and suffers from numerous occasions of tonal whiplash.

Final Score - 2/10

I can’t remember the last time a film hasn’t simply not worked. It’s one of the easier skips I can recommend as well.

Only the Brave Review

Plot Summary - Following the true story of members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, from their birth to their ultimate challenge.

Pros - The cast is tremendous, and the story manages a decent mix of action and drama.

Cons - It’s a slow drama, and I’m basically allergic to those. There are sections of the story that go nowhere and just feel tacked on to padden the run time.

Final Score - 7/10’

Not the best, but nowhere near bad. I’d say take it with a grain of salt.

Spirited Away Retro Review

Plot Summary - When Chihiro Ogino (Rumi Hiiragi) and her parents enter a spirit world, chihiro finds herself having to rescue her parents from a witch by working for her in her spirit spa.

Pros - The animation is amazing, and the story manages a good balance of humour and drama throughout. It even manages to host a wide variety of characters while also keeping them all interesting as well.

Cons - The story feels a touch all over, but never enough to pull you out of it too much.

Final Score - 9/10

Definitely one of the better anime films I’ve ever seen. Glad I got to see it on the big screen.

So I’m on vacation from Nov. 2nd (2017) to Nov. 11th (2017), so there might not be as many reviews, but there will be a few here or there, so keep an eye out for those.
