Hello All,
Upon reflection, I don’t think I’ve done an anime film yet for this blog. Let me know if I’m wrong, but I can’t think of one I’ve seen recently. For those of you who may not know, anime is american shorthand for Japanese Animation, that focuses more colourful graphics, vibrant characters, and fantastical themes. While the term anime is used in Japan, it simply encompasses all Japanese Animation within the country, like how north america would call our animated shows cartoons.
Now you might recognize the name of the film from the upcoming remake, which is why this film was actually suggested to me. It’s considered one of the greatest of the genre, but how does it fair in my world? Let’s find out together shall we?
Plot Summary - In 2029, almost every aspect of life is connected by a vast electronic network. Much of humanity connects to this through cybernetic bodies, or “shells”, which possesses their consciousness, as well as superhuman abilities. Our main character, Motoko Kusanagi (Atsuko Tanaka), is a public security officer out to capture an elusive hacker known as the puppet master. However, as she follows the trail, she goes further into a political mystery that may prove to be disastrous.
Pros - They aren’t lying about the animation on display here, because it is definitely impressive. The world and lore is interesting as well, as you get a wide range of what the technology in the world is capable of. The voice acting is great as well, and the characters do feel nice and flushed out.
Cons - At 82 minutes, the movie can feel a bit short. Also, as much as they try and explain everything as best as they can, you can’t help but feel like you need to know more than they’re telling you.
Final Score - 8/10
It’s a pretty solid anime, although maybe I wouldn’t go straight to it if you’re new to the genre.
Next Suggestion Box Review: Is actually going to be something slightly different, mostly just in terms of what we will be discussing. I’ll probably try and put it out the same week I do this one.
