Hello All,
It’s very late at the time of writing this, as I’ve spent a very long day travelling and watching to very different movies. One’s an adaptation of a young adult novel (original I know), and one’s a zombie film (also original, I know). So how did these films do in overcrowded genres? Let’s find out together shall we?
Before I Fall Review
Plot Summary - Samantha Kingston (Zoey Deutch) is a high school senior who seems to be living the same day of her life over and over again. Stuck in the loop, she soon thinks of what she might have to do to break the cycle.
Pros - Deutch is easily the best thing about the film, as she does put in a really solid performance as Samantha. The story is overall fine, as it tries to deal with themes of consequence and how the choices we make in our lives impact everyone around us and not just ourselves. It also does have some really touching moments throughout the film as well.
Cons - The film is about 100 minutes long, which unfortunately it doesn’t spend wisely. It chooses to skip a lot of the time, opting for montages with just long scenes of exposition after. It’s also got this fucking annoying narration that all it does is just treat the audience like idiots because it over explains every key scene. Every other character are one dimensional stereotypes, with maybe a couple of them getting any sort of minimal character depth given to them.
Final Score - 5/10
It’s a film that fights it’s own concept so much, that it just robs itself of any potential greatness. It makes it a fairly standard film, not bad but not good either. See it if you want too.
The Girl with all The Gifts
Plot Summary - In a dystopian future, the world has been overrun by “the hungries”, people who have been infected by a fungal infection. After one of the last few outposts is overrun, an infected girl named Melanie (Sennia Nanua) and a handful of survivors must work their way through the horde to find another base.
Pros - Overall I really liked everything about the film. The cast is solid throughout, the story plays out nicely and even takes some interesting turns. It looks better than most zombie films nowadays, and even goes a different route with how it portrays certain aspects and ideas that I haven’t seen much of in other zombie films.
Cons - it’s a bit slow to start at first, and some people might not be fond of the ending admittedly. If you’re expecting a lot of close zombie calls also, there are a few, but not as much as say resident evil.
Final Score - 9/10
It’s a really nice take on zombie films, and if you’re looking for something a bit different out of the genre, it’s a definite recommend.
Next: The Shack or Table 19 - That’ll probably be Wednesday, it also depends on which movie I’m feeling that day.
