Hello All,
Yeah It’s actually Arrival this time, and I’m sorry it took so long. I have to be honest this one snuck up on me a bit, and not just in terms of release date. The trailers also did a really fantastic job of not spoiling anything about it also, so whoever made those trailers, they need more work. So without any further ado, let’s review one of the highest rated films of the year shall we?
Plot Summary - When 12 alien ships touchdown on earth, Linguistics Doctor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is drafted to talk to the visitors and figure what their purpose is for visiting earth.
Pros - This is going to be really hard to talk about without potentially spoiling anything, so while I will try my best to avoid doing that, I’m going to put a MILD SPOILER ALERT here just in case. The cast is really stellar, especially Amy Adams when you figure why she feels the way she does throughout. The story is really good, and plays out rather realistically throughout most of it. The way it transitions into the biggest part of the movie feels natural and is an amazing revelation once you get there. The supporting cast is stellar, and the conflicts in the film feel natural to the story. It’s also a gorgeous looking film, preferring to take on a darker colour palette that lends well to the films overall style.
Cons - I have three personal issues with the film, and one general issue I want to point out to everyone. First, the film takes a long time to get to the biggest point of the film, and while I wasn’t bored, it does feel like it’s drawn out quite a lot. Second, a key moment in the film in the film, while essential to the plot and makes sense in the logic of the film, unfortunately cannot quite shake the feeling that it feels like a cop out moment. Third, a key line of dialogue was sadly underutilized to the point where I actually called what the character was about to say. Overall, as much as I do enjoy these types of films for the most part, if you hate slow build ups and films that require you to do a lot of thinking, you will not like this film.
Final Score - 9/10
If it weren’t for just those few nagging issues, this would’ve easily been a 10. It really is a solid film, and I definitely recommend seeing it when you can.
Next: Moonlight - Trying for Monday with this one.
