Hello All,
So it’s time again for another book to film adaptation, and as a shock to no one, this is yet another book I’ve never read. That being the case, this from a distance reminded me off gone girl. I actually really liked Gone Girl, I even put it on my best of list for 2014. So with this being looking quite similar, and looking like a genuinely intriguing mystery, how did the film hold up? Let’s find out together shall we?
Plot Summary - Rachel Watson (Emily Blunt) is an alcoholic divorcee, who watches a couple living near her ex husband from the train that passes by their house. When one day she sees someone else at the house with the wife, she decides to confront her, but passes out, and wakes up to the news that the wife has disappeared. Now, with her memories in question and under suspicion, she takes it upon herself to remember what happened that night once and for all.
Pros - Emily Blunt is fantastic as Rachel. She perfectly manages to walk that line of instability in her character. The story itself is really well written, and the ending is also quite surprising as well. The film also really manages to capture the mood in the way it’s shoot and the way it’s cinematography looks.
Cons - The rest of the cast feel like one note characters to an extent. The film’s biggest flaw by far are the fact that it doesn’t really quite grasp you after the conflict is set in motion. She gets to the tunnel and afterwards it never really quite draws you back in until almost near the end. It’s not to say I wasn’t interested, I just wasn’t invested beyond just surface level.
Final Score - 5/10
I’m actually disappointed. I was really looking forward to this one, and maybe I might have built up too much hype for it, but it just didn’t click with me. Maybe the book is better, I might check it out, but for the film adaptation, I’d say see if you want to.
Next - The Birth of a Nation (2016). I just really thought it was needed to put the year there. Also, I’m trying to delay seeing middle school as much as possible.
