Double Movie Review: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016) & Masterminds (2016)

Hello All,

Boy we’re in for a doozy today. We have a Harry Potter by way of the X-Men childrens horror film, and a comedic heist film based on a true story. So two kind of very opposite ends of the spectrum type movies. I always like doing these types of double reviews, as it really gets me to stretch my brain out a bit, something I admittedly need to do more often. This is also the reason I waited until after I got some sleep to write this, because I did actually need to sleep on these ones. Why? Let’s find out together shall we?

Miss Peregrine’s Review

Plot Summary - When Jake Portman’s (Asa Butterfield) grandfather is killed under mysterious circumstances, his last cryptic message finds him going to wales, and finding a time loop which takes him back to Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children in the year 1943. It’s there he learns that he himself is peculiar, and is also the one who can save them from an evil threat.

Pros - The film does manage to keep up with Tim Burton’s visual style quite well, as the look of the film is easily it’s best feature. The characters are interesting, both in personality, and in abilities. The main cast is great for the most part, and the film manages to keep an interesting pace as well. There’s also a pretty weird fight scene near the end that will definitely make it’s way onto one of my new year end lists.

Cons - I really hate to say this, but Asa Butterfield might be the weakest actor in the film. There’s just something about how every emotion he’s supposed to be feeling seems just kind of off. It feels like he spends the whole movie being only mildly surprised at everything going on around him. The supporting characters unfortunately get pushed to the side quite a lot, Terence Stamp included. There’s also a pretty familiar feel in terms of similarities to other stories like it. I stand by my Harry Potter by way of X-men statement earlier.

Final Score - 6/10

I will confess that up until the weird fight scene, it was sitting at a 5. Honestly though, because of that one scene alone I’d say see it when you can.

Masterminds Review

Plot Summary - Based on the 1997 Loomis Fargo Robbery, the film follows a gang of amateur and their plan, and the aftermath, of one of the largest bank heists in history.

Pros - This film might actually be the perfect example of how a film can be so amazingly…….

Cons - …..not funny. The easiest way to tell you about how much this film sucks is that I never laughed once. Hell, I barely cracked a smile during one of the outtakes scenes at the end of the movie, and even then, the fact that them doing something in the movie incorrectly was the only thing that got an emotional response out of me while watching it should tell you something. The characters are unlikable, the plot is idiotic, every single scene is just stuff simply happening, and they expect you to laugh at the weirdness all of it. I truly think that they should remarket this film as the greatest anti joke of all time.

Final Score - 1/10

I can only recommend this film if you’re a fan of anti-jokes. Jokes that are not supposed to make you laugh, but rather sit there and wonder what in the hell would ever make anyone think it was supposed to be funny.
