Movie Review: Keanu (2016)

NEWEST REVIEW IS LIVE! Today, let's get our gangster on as we go looking for Keanu

Hello All,

For a little insight on the behind the scenes of how this blog is run, last night I spent over an hour debating which one of six movies to go see. Strangely enough the one I chose was the one that was playing at the closest theatre, which made the whole debate relatively pointless, except for the fact that I can tell you that I won’t be short of reviews for hopefully the next little while.
I can also say that I went into this not knowing much of Key and Peele’s previous material except for the college football names sketch but only because I’m a human being who's lived on this planet. Truth be told with the fact that most of the comedies I’ve been seeing since I’ve started doing these reviews have been mostly awful, I’ve really been hoping for something really funny to sink my teeth into. I will admit though the idea seemed unlikely at first, but the more times I saw the trailer the more it actually started to grow on me (same can be said for Central Intelligence.) So how did my first real foray into Key and Peele’s brand of comedy fair? Let’s find out shall we?

Plot Summary - After breaking up with his girlfriend, Rell (Jordan Peele) adopts a stray kitten and names it Keanu. After his home is broken into and Keanu gets taken, he enlists his cousin Clarence (Keegan-Michael Key) to infiltrate the gang that took him and find a way to get him back.

Pros - The premise is interesting and they actually do a lot to make the most of it. It is strangely hilarious to watch all the people in the movie who come into contact with Keanu instantly fall in love with the little guy. I can also honestly say that this is the first movie in awhile where I found myself genuinely laughing out loud multiple times. The cast does really well too, as they’re not only just good with the comedic timing but the dramatic moments as well. The story for the most part is interesting and varied in the situations they find themselves in for such a simple main idea of trying to rescue a cat. There’s also a touch of smart social satire as the film does touch on ideas of racial standards and stereotypes.

Cons - There’s one scene that admittedly feels a touch out of place, and there’s a revelation later on in the film that I saw coming early on that lessened its impact a bit.

Final Score - 9/10

It’s a definitive watch, and definitely not just for Key and Peele fans. I’m excited to see if these guys keep making movies and I’d love to see them keep going with more ideas.

Next - The Lobster: For anyone who doesn’t know, this is a movie about a single man who has 45 days to find true love or be turned into an animal of his choosing, which is a lobster. I cannot wait.

We have 3 new followers on the twitter blog, so we are getting closer to the first goal of 15. When we hit 10, I’ll figure out a way to have you guys send in suggestions for what you might want me to review. Twitter account is here: https://twitter.com/RyansMovieBlog

Last Review is here: I tackled the latest video game movie Ratchet and Clank.

Until then, I’ll see you folks at the movies.

Movie Review: Ratchet and Clank (2016)

Newest Review is LIVE!! and now by accident, another video game movie.

Hello All,

Okay now I know what you’re thinking, “It’s a videogame movie it’s going to be bad right?” True the track record for them has not been stellar, as the only one anyone might say as being remotely okay is maybe Prince of Persia, even if it was only because that film was above average at best. Hell, if you want an example just look at the last review for Hitman: Agent 47 I did, and that was the second attempt at that franchise. Sure we have a few more of these films coming up in the future that look promising, like Angry Birds and Assassin’s Creed, but could it be possible that the first really good video game movie might already have been made and is now only being released to the public this week? Let’s find out together shall we?

Plot Summary - Based on the video game series of the same name, the story tells the origins of how the Lombax Ratchet (James Arnold Taylor) met the robot Clank (David Kaye) as the attempt to stop the plot of the evil Chairman Drek (Paul Giamatti) and the Blarg race.

Pros - Now I haven’t played a ratchet and clank game, but from what I’ve seen the animation is dead on the same type of animation as from the games which is honestly pretty good. The voice cast does a really good job as well, especially Sylvester Stallone in a role where I had to wait through the credits to figure out who he played. The humour and action are for the most part on point as well, as it decides not to really go into unnecessarily vulgar humour for the sake of trying to be edgy when it doesn’t need to be. They even take a few creative jabs at themselves in terms of some of the plot points. I did talk to some fans of the games after the show and they said the game was also very faithful to the nature of the games.

Cons - The plot does have a familiar feel to it, as it’s the kind of space bearing story we’ve seen quite a few times before. Also there are moments where the jokes fall flat and story leaves a couple of unanswered questions.

Final Score - 8/10

The film is pretty good. Definitely worth a watch even if you don’t know the games, and one I can definitely recommend. It’s amazing to me then that it has, at the time of writing this, a 15% on rotten tomatoes. Maybe I’m soft hearted for a good effort.

Next - Keanu. This took me way too long to decide.

So I’m doing a new thing, the previous review is here. It’s the Hitman review I mentioned above.

The twitter account is ten followers away from revealing the options for the 25 follower poll. The account is here: https://twitter.com/RyansMovieBlog

Until then, I’ll see you folks at the movies.

Bad Movies I Love: Hitman Agent 47 (2015)

Newest Review is LIVE!! It's time to re explore a top 10 worst film

Hello All,

Regular readers may recall the poll I had where I had you vote for on a bad film that I actually liked for me to review. The poll ended in a tie and this is the first of the split vote winners, Hitman Agent 47. Now not only did I give this it’s own review back in August (Read that here) but it also ended up at Number 9 on my top ten worst of 2015 (also read that here). So basically I’ve covered why the film is bad quite a few times, so today I’m going to focus more on why I enjoy it instead.

Truth be told, it’s just so damn bad in almost every aspect that it’s actually kind of endearing. Aside from the admittedly interesting action scenes, this movie suffers from almost every kind of problem imaginable and that makes it really quite fascinating. It’s almost like watching a trainwreck unfold before your eyes in that it’s horrible but you really can’t turn away.

To me, and I hate making this comparison, but it’s almost kind of like the room. I mean at least in my mind that’s what it kind of reminds me of. The first time you just watch and are just amazed at how something this bad can even get made. Now, on my second viewing of it, I find myself noticing things I didn’t before that sort of just adds to the majesty of just how pointless the whole movie is, which in turn just makes it all the more mesmerizing to watch.

The only true thing I will gives this movie credit for is the action scenes, even if it has to go to ridiculous lengths sometimes to set them up. It’s also kind of weirdly graphic in how these guys are killed. That and they made Zachary Quinto basically the terminator is pretty funny.

Final Score - 1/10

But, after some time to think on it, I will give this the Lower Score Seal of Approval, for just how entertaining it is anyways. It’s number nine worst spot though will not be changed because at the end of the day though, it’s still a bad film.

Next: Ratchet and Clank - At least for newly released movies.

But here and now, I can officially reveal the Critically Acclaimed Film that I Hate: Interstellar.

Until then, I’ll see you folks at the movies.

Triple movie review: Miles Ahead (2016), I Saw the Light (2016), and Everybody Wants Some (2016)

It is a triple review folks.

Hello All,

Man it’s been awhile since I’ve done one of these. It actually sort of worked out like this by accident. Originally I was going to do Miles Ahead today, but I learned that Everybody Wants Some was playing nearby, so I caught the last showing of Miles Ahead Sunday night. Then, as I was planning when to see Everybody Wants Some, I learned that I Saw the Light was playing at the same theatre. So I decided to do a double, and turn that double into a triple review. So basically an insight into how uninteresting my life is, but that means reviews for you guys, so it works out. So let’s get started shall we?

Miles Ahead Review Here

Plot Summary - During the course of two days, Jazz Musician Miles Davis (Don Cheadle) and reporter Dave Braden (Ewan McGregor) deal with Mile’s label pressuring him for more music, while he reflects over his life and failed relationship with his wife.

Pros - Don Cheadle as both the lead and the director is really good, as he puts on both an amazing performance as Miles, and also has a very unique directorial take on the story as well. He manages to switch perfectly between the present and the past in very interesting ways that usually transition smoothly. The rest of the cast does their jobs well, and the cinematography is really well done also. The music is also really good as well, I might even look into it as well,

Cons - The film plays out more like a story you might’ve heard about Miles rather than a full examination of his life. While they do touch on it well, if you were expecting a more straightforward affair you’ll be disappointed. It also does have a few standard moments for these kinds of movies.

Final Score - 9/10

It’s a really entertaining film that I can definitely recommend, even if you don’t know much about it’s subject matter.

I Saw the Light

Plot Summary - The film follows the career of country music singer Hank Williams (Tom Hiddleston) from his rise to fame, to his untimely death.

Pros - Tom Hiddleston is really good as Williams. He fully embraces the character and his music as he passionately delivers probably one of the best performances of his career……

Cons - …..even though the rest of the film is god awful crap. The film is so scatter brained as to what it wants to cover in regards to his life that I feel like that I came out knowing less than I did going in. There are scenes that go nowhere, then just jump to the next scene with no setup as to what’s going on now. I first you think it’s going to be narrated, then they drop that aspect completely until the movie is nearly over. It’s trying so hard to be walk the line that it tells you almost nothing about Hank Williams. The film is so bad that it barely even touches on his music career, as I have no idea about any of his songs or how popular they were except for maybe a few of them. An hour into the movie I was begging for it to be over, and if it wasn't for the fact that I was seeing another movie after it I would’ve walked.

Final Score - 1/10

I can barely recommend this film to Tom Hiddleston fans, and I don’t even know if I can recommend this to Hank Williams fans. There is good material for a movie in his life, but this film does not do the man justice.

Everybody Wants Some!!

Plot Summary - During the first weekend before a new semester of college, baseball player Jake (Blake Jenner) gets to know his new teammates and familiarize himself with the college lifestyle of the course of the weekend.

Pros - The film has been labelled the spiritual successor to Dazed and Confused, and for the most part it earns that status. The relatively unknown cast is awesome, the story is well told and entertaining, and the soundtrack is full of classic music. It really is just a fun movie to watch as you feel like you’re tagging along with the characters for their weekend.

Cons - It doesn’t quite meet up to standards set by Dazed and Confused, but I would still consider it a pretty damn good follow up.

Final Score - 10/10

That being said, these are pretty good companion films and definitely worth checking out along with Dazed and Confused. I recommend watching the first one though before you see this one.

Next: Hitman Agent 47 - I’ve put this off long enough, it’ll either be tomorrow or wednesday.

Alright, so I’m doing this thing where if the twitter account hits 25 followers there will be a new poll to vote on. It’ll include these options:

  1. The Complete Series: I’ll review a complete series of films for something I wouldn’t normally tackle.
  2. Retro Review: I have a long list of these.
  3. Bad Movie I Love: Maybe of the previous poll list, maybe not.
  4. Good Movie I Hate: this one will be more of a surprise, a chance to embarrass myself a little bit.
  5. DVD Review: Explains itself.
  6. Fresh Perspective: I’ll either re-watch a film that I’ve reviewed or a newer film that I have not reviewed.

When the account hits 15 followers, I’ll put options in for each of these, but I’m willing to accept suggestions in the meantime. I want this poll to be something that you guys get involved in, something you guys are willing to see me do, whether I’ll enjoy it or not.

Until then, I’ll see you folks at the movies.

Movie Review: The Huntsman Winter's War (2016)

Newest Review is LIVE!!! Let's go out and hunt with The Huntsman

Hello All,

How many of you remember Snow White and The Huntsman for anything else other than the fact that it ruined the relationship between Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart before they filmed the last two Twilight Movies raise your hand? How many of you actually raised your hand? Don’t worry I counted it, and no you don’t want to know how I did it. Now for the actual movie itself, I remember it being fairly okay. It wasn’t anything special except for being an interesting take on a really old story. The best thing to come out of it in the mind’s of a lot of people was Charlize Theron as the evil queen, and Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman. Now if they were to make a sequel, they would have to find a way to not have Kristen Stewart involved because that would be bad press. The only other option then? A prequel/sequel hybrid involving the Huntsman that somehow brings the dead Evil Queen back. What could possibly go wrong with that idea right?

Plot Summary - Set before and after the events of the previous film, it finds the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) trying to live a quiet life, until word gets to him that the evil mirror has disappeared during transport to a safe haven. With the help of a former lover (Jessica Chastain) and a group of dwarves, they must recover the mirror before it falls into hand of the evil queen's Sister (Emily Blunt.)

Pros - It is a pretty decent looking fantasy film, and the acting for the most part is fine.

Cons - That being said, it suffers from being generic as all hell. There’s not a single thing here except for maybe the setting that hasn’t been done both before and better. The actors for the life of them cannot pick an accent and stick with it. Sometimes, they’re Irish, sometimes Scottish, sometimes English, and some don’t have accents with make it more confusing. Also, for a movie surrounding snow white, they only show snow white from behind once. If this was it’s own separate entity, it would probably be a lot better because it wouldn’t have to try and wrap itself around the other story.

Final Score - 2/10

If it hadn’t been made as a snow white related story it actually would’ve probably gotten a 5, an average film, but as a sequel/prequel hybrid it really contributes nothing to the original story.

Next: Miles Ahead or Hitman Agent: 47 - Depending entirely on what I feel like doing tomorrow.

I forgot to put it in the last review but if the twitter account hits 25 followers I will make a poll for you to decide what specialty review I do.

So basically it’ll be between:

  1. The Complete Series
  2. Retro Review
  3. Bad Movie I Love
  4. Good Movie I Hate
  5. DVD Review
  6. Fresh Perspective

If I get to 15 followers, I’ll add the names of the movies or series onto the end of those choices. I will do some in the meantime, but I have special choices lined up for those.

Twitter account is here: https://twitter.com/RyansMovieBlog

Until then, I’ll see you folks at the movies.

Movie Review: Criminal (2016)

Newest Review is LIVE!!!! Today let's go on the run from the law with Criminal.

Hello All,

Sorry for the delay on this one. The original plan had to be abandoned due to scheduling conflicts, but luckily I had the next day off to go see it. I have to say, I’m glad I took the time, because now I can say that I saw a terrible Kevin Costner movie for the next generation. Why do I say this? Let’s find out together shall we?

Plot Summary - When a CIA agent is killed before his mission is completed, his memories are transferred into a lunatic criminal named Jericho Stewart (Kevin Costner.)

Pros - Okay, despite what I said Kevin Costner and Gal Gadot might be the only cast members who are trying in this film, as both are them aren’t bad.

Cons - This film’s biggest problem is that it takes would should’ve been a silly B movie premise and plays it way too damn straight. Everything about this film is so serious and yet none of it can be taken seriously. The rest of the cast feel like they’re on autopilot, the story is predictable, they barely do anything with the premise, and the ending is nonsensical and goes for a happy ending that it really doesn’t deserve. Truth be told the whole movie is just boring.

Final Score - 1/10

If you have not heard anything about this movie, just know that it is bad. It was a waste of time that I’ll never get back and truthfully, I won’t remember this until the end of the year when it comes time to do the year end lists.

Next: I actually don’t know. I have a few options but don’t know which one to do next so, I guess consider it a surprise.

Until then, I’ll see you folks at the movies.

Movie Review: The Jungle Book (2016)

Newest Review is LIVE!!! We've seen the original, how's the live action?

Hello All,

No one is really truly excited for a remake, especially for a film that some people thinks didn’t need a remake at all. There is a very long explanation that I can one day deliver, but now is not the time for that, as we have a remake to judge. So let’s get to it shall we?

Plot Summary - Mowgli (Neel Sethi) is a young orphan boy living in the jungle with a wolf pack. When the Tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba) returns to the jungle and threatens to kill the boy, he decides to leave the jungle with the help of the Panther Bagheera (Ben Kingsley) and the Bear Baloo (Bill Murray).

Pros - It very much follows the plot of the animated film, while expanding on elements that we never really saw. Mowgli’s departure is more emotional, we get a better backstory of where he came from, and we get a better look at Shere Khan’s motivation. We also get a better look into Mowgli’s character as well. The CGI animals looks remarkable too as they basically never look fake and blend into the really good looking forest as well. The voice cast is phenomenal, and we even get to hear Bill Murray and Christopher Walken sing. They even massively improved the original’s ending

Cons - I got nothing.

Final Score - 10/10

It’s one of the rare remakes that actually improves dramatically over the original. I still love the animated version, but for a more emotional and in depth story, the newer one is the better view.

Next: Criminal - I’m seeing this one early, but I won’t be home until later that night. I hear it’s awful, I’m looking forward to it.

Twitter Account is here - https://twitter.com/RyansMovieBlog. If I hit 25 followers, I’ll maybe make an open suggestion poll, with some restrictions because I know you people too damn well.

Until then I’ll see you folks at the movies.

Movie Review: Demolition (2016)

Newest Review is LIVE!!! Today let's just go break some stuff with Demolition

Hello All,

Man I’ve been busy this week, but luckily with the weekend catching up on us I’ve managed to catch up a bit on the releases around me. That being said, I know I have another two  or three ahead of me over the next few days so it’s also been a bit of a mental exercise for me keeping track of everything. That being said, let’s dive into the next review shall we?

Plot Summary - Davis Mitchell (Jake Gyllenhaal) struggles emotionally after losing his wife in a car accident. After a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns into a series of confessional letters, he forms a connection with Karen (Naomi Watts), who's been receiving the letters, and begins to take apart the life he knew.

Pros - The cast is really good in this film, especially Jake in probably one of his better performances. The supporting cast is really good as well, and overall it is a solid looking film as well. It also manages to keep up the pace with how the main character feels in the film...

Cons -....That being said, it does end up sort of meandering from point to point. It also desperately tries to be deep and meaningful but instead kind of comes across as cliched. It’s also a touch on the slow side and for the most part the film feels kind of lifeless.

Final Score - 5/10

While not a bad film, it does come off as very generic. This is actually the third collaboration between Jake and this director, I've seen their other films, they’re much better. So go watch those instead unless you don't really mind average, not that that’s a bad thing.

Next: The Jungle Book (2016) - That’s right folks, it’s time now to see the new live action version. I gotta say, I’m stoked.

Until then, I’ll see you folks at the movies.

Retro Review: The Jungle Book (1967)

Newest Review is LIVE!!! Today we go retro with the animated Jungle Book

Hello All,

With one of the more anticipated live action remakes coming up on us this week, Jon Favreau’s version of the Jungle Book, I decided to take a look at the version that I remember growing up, the 1967 musical animated version. The reason I’m more familiar with this one is due to two reasons. One: I was in boy scouts and the jungle book was basically a guide for us, and two: I have an aunt who loves disney films, so we watched basically all of them growing up. Besides who doesn’t love The Bare Necessities? Plus with the day I had yesterday, I needed something light to bring my mood back up. So let’s take a look at some nostalgia shall we?

Plot Summary - After being raised by wolves all his life, Mowgli (Bruce Reitherman) finds himself being escorted out of it by Bagheera (Sebastian Cabot) after the Tiger Shere Khan (George Sanders) threatens to kill him. With the help of the bear Baloo (Phil Harris) they must avoid the dangers of the jungle and take him back to the man village to be with his own kind.

Pros - For a nearly 50 year old movie, a lot of it is still pretty good even by today's animation and voice acting standards. The acting is great, if a touch corny, but the animation I think still serves as one of the best examples of disney’s best work of that time period. The story is well told and heartfelt, and the soundtrack is pure 60’s jazz gold. The pacing of the film flows smoothly and nothing really feels out of place or awkward.

Cons - At 75 minutes the story does feel a touch on the short side, especially at the beginning. You really don’t get most of those heartfelt moments until the end. Also the ending leaves a touch to be desired, it isn’t bad, more towards weird.

Final Score - 9/10

The few flaws aren’t really enough to drag down the rest of the film. It’s still one of Disney’s best and I definitely recommend it if you have the time.

Next: Demolition - This one will most likely be out later tomorrow night, unless the theatre opens before 5pm.

Bored on Twitter? Why not follow the new blog account here https://twitter.com/RyansMovieBlog

Until then, I’ll see you folks at the movies.

Movie Review: Midnight Special (2016)

Newest Review is LIVE!!! Today's let us stay up late with Midnight Special.

Hello All,

In an effort to try and play catch up with some of the limited release movies today, I spent all day riding buses to get to the other side of the city to see a movie most people probably haven’t heard of. If that sounds pompous, I apologize I’m literally exhausted. So I’m going to try and keep this short today. Let’s get to it shall we?

Plot Summary - Roy (Michael Shannon) is escaping a religious cult with the help of his long lost friend Lucas (Joel Edgerton) with his son Alton (Jaeden Lieberher) in tow, after discovering that Alton has supernatural powers and must go to an undisclosed location within four days, with both the government and the cult following close behind them.

Pros - The cast is really good in this, especially young Jaeden. The film is also well shot and honestly has a pretty solid and interesting story to boot.

Cons - It’s a bit heavy handed with the deeper meanings it’s clearly trying to go for, and the ending may be frustrating to those who prefer to get definitive answers.

Final Score - 8/10

If you like sci fi and drama, this one will be good for you. If lack of answers drive you nuts, stay away.

Next: Jungle Book (1967) - That’s right folks, We’re doing a retro review. Thank god because that means I can stay at home.

If you’re looking for a new twitter account to follow the blog’s account is here: https://twitter.com/RyansMovieBlog. I also might take some time next week to change the look of the blog just a tad so keep an eye out for that.

Until then, I’ll see you folks at the movies.

Movie Review: Hardcore Henry (2016)

Newest Review is LIVE!!!!! Today we take control of Hardcore Henry

Hello All,

Well this is a first for me. I can easily say that I have never seen a movie shot entirely from the point of view of the main character. The closest I ever came was actually an episode of the Tv Show M*A*S*H that had you take the point of view of one of the patients. In fact it was literally called Point of view which you can read about here. I will admit though, it’s not one of my favorites, but at least it was watchable and unique. But how would it work applying that idea not only to a Movie, but an action movie. Let’s find out together shall we?

Plot Summary - Henry wakes up in a lab with no memory of his past. As he is being rebuilt, the technician working on him reveals her name is Estelle (Haley Bennett) and that she and Henry are married. When a man named Akan (Danila Kozlovsky) attacks the lab and attempts to capture Henry, they kidnap his wife instead and throw him over a bridge. When a man named Jimmy (Sharlto Copley) shows up and claims he’s there to help him, the two men must overcome all odds to stop the bad guy, and save the girl.

Pros - Let’s start with the main feature of the film, the point of view perspective. I honestly think the way they made it work with the film is mind blowing. It just manages to capture the scenes just right, and it makes everything that much more intense because it’s all so much closer to you. It’s the same with interacting with characters, you’re more emotionally invested because you do believe they are talking to you. The different things all balance out well too, including a really awesome sniper sequence. Speaking of the cast, they are all awesome, but Copley especially can use this as his acting resume forever. He basically plays different versions of himself and pulls off each version awesomely. The way the film looks and plays out too is well done, as they have just the right balance so that it doesn’t feel too chaotic when it shouldn’t, but when it’s supposed to be chaotic making it flow well enough that you don’t get lost. The action scenes were really cool too, as they have Henry do a lot of different stuff and again the balance is just right. It also doesn’t try and pad itself out with unneeded scenes, making the whole thing just flow smoothly. The music is also fantastic. Look up the soundtrack if you can, it’s on Spotify and Itunes.

Cons - The villain has some abilities that are never really explained, but considering everything that goes on in this movie I guess they expect the audience to play along. Also, if you do get motion sickness, prepare yourself before seeing it.

Final Score - 10/10
It’s a simple concept, executed brilliantly, and honestly it reminds me a hell of a lot of Repo Men, which is always a plus. If you can, go see this movie. It’s an experience you need to have in your life.

Next: Either Midnight Special or Demolition. It depends on how much travelling I want to do. Also I’m going to try my best to do a retro review of the animated Jungle Book movie so keep an eye out for that.

Alright folks, the poll for the next bad movie to review is now closed, as in I’m not checking the results again after this review. The results with a total of six votes is:

A Split Decision.

Okay, so basically two of the options tied, so instead of dragging out I’ve decided to do the following:

The First Review will be: Hitman Agent 47.

The Second Will Be: Review a Critically Loved Movie you hate instead!

I’m doing it like this because it’ll take me longer to find a movie for the second option. The next poll will be up with the second review for the next round of voting. Thanks so much to everyone who voted, if yours did not get selected, round up some supporters, and get them to vote.

Until then, I’ll see you folks at the movies.

Movie Review: The Boss (2016)

Newest Review is LIVE!!!!! Today we clench our buttholes in fear, as we go to see The Boss

Hello All,

A couple of quick updates before we proceed:
  1. This will be the last review to vote on the next bad movie I like to review. You can vote for that here: http://goo.gl/cuj0Cu The results will be posted at the end of the next Review.
  2. I have a twitter account, if you’d like to follow it, do so here: https://twitter.com/RyansMovieBlog

That out of the way, let’s begin.

My viewing of the Melissa Mccarthy movies is sporadic at best. Off the top of my head I’ve seen Bridesmaids and Spy. I skipped Tammy, forgot The Heat was a thing and anything else I’m forgetting I apologize. Yet apparently I have seen the only good ones according to most as she seems to have a rather big divide in terms of popularity. I’ve met quite a few defenders of her work, and for an example of how much she’s hated I need only to point to the backlash of her doing the Ghostbusters reboot. I have nothing against her personally, I think she can be rather funny and I’m actually looking forward to Ghostbusters. But after seeing this one, it’s going to be hard to defend it because…….oh dear.

Let’s take a glance at my misery together shall we?

Plot Summary - When Mega CEO Michelle Darnell (Melissa McCarthy) gets arrested for Insider Trading, she gets out of prison eager to find a new business and rebuild her empire.

Pros - There’s a pretty surreal scene where there are two parody girl guide groups beating the shit out of each other. That’s about it.

Cons - I will only say this once: IT IS NOT FUNNY! Why? Every joke is predictable, the writing is lazy, the story is so cliched that they actually point it out in the movie in an attempt at irony and fails miserably at it. The characters are stereotypical, and while the actors are trying my god they have nothing to work with. I actually had to get up and step outside for second. I can’t even quote you a single joke from it and it hasn’t even been 4 hours at the time of writing this. What more can I say other than it’s bad?

Final Score - 1/10
I feel like I owe The Brothers Grimsby an apology. I will say if you like Melissa McCarthy then you will enjoy this, but people, you deserve better from her. I hope she can redeem herself in Ghostbusters.

Next: Hardcore Henry - Wild Horses couldn’t keep me from this one. You have no idea.

Until then, I’ll see you folks at the movies.
