Hello all,
To make up for rushing the first three reviews, I will be writing these ones as I watch them, and then posting this when I have finished. So by the time you see this, my journey through the Rocky series will be over, and then I should be seeing Creed after this. So how do the latter half of the Rocky films stand up? Let’s find out together shall we?
Rocky IV
Plot Summary - After regaining his title back, Rocky decides to spend more time with his family, until a new russian fighter tries to fight Rocky, but pulls Apollo Creed into the ring instead.
Pros - The cast is still pretty solid after all this time, and the story for this one isn’t all that bad.
Cons - Where to start? The robot they give Paulie as a gift in the beginning is random as fuck and creepy as hell. The plot is so thin, it’s padded out with full song montages, including the entirety of Living in America. There’s literally montages within minutes of each other, including the final fight. Its heavy handed propaganda about the dangers of the cold war, and overall it’s just really fucking dumb.
Final Score - 4/10
It’s not technically bad it just suffers from being really dumb. It’s worth viewing once, and that’s it. I recommend you do it drunk.
Rocky V
Plot Summary - After the fight with Drago leaves Rocky unable to continue his boxing career, he decides to re-open mickey's old gym and take on a trainee in the form of Tommy Gunn.
Pros - There’s a few decent moments and the ideas not bad.
Cons - Simply put, it’s bleak, depressing, boring, and just frankly does not hold up against any of the other films in the series.
Final Score - 1/10
Rocky Balboa
Plot Summary - Now long retired, a computer simulation fight against the current champion prompts Rocky to get back into fighting, just as the champ comes calling for a match.
Pros - It actually does try and play it out quite like the first film except for the fact that he’s now lot older and it works out well for the most part. The story is compelling, it gives us a balanced take on both fighters and it adds some new characters that blend into the mix well.
Cons - It’s a bit slow to start, and I admit using a computer fight as a plot point is a bit silly.
Final Score - 8/10 (Although I like it more than Rocky 3)
There we are folks, overall a good series if it did suffer a slight decline for a few films.
So, for The next bAtch of films foR the complete series, I Was debAting going thRough another Series of six films that I can split into two groups of three……
