Movie Review: Creed (2015)

Hello All,

Six Rocky movies later, I finally managed to go and see the new sequel/spinoff Creed. So let’s not drag this out any longer, let’s see how it did shall we?

Plot Summary - Thirteen years after the death of Apollo Creed, his wife finds and adopts the son that Apollo beared with another woman born shortly after he died. Now grown up, Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan) tries to make it on his own as a fighter without the name, and enlists the help of Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) to do so.

Pros - I think the biggest thing this movie gets right is the fact that it does indeed make Adonis the main character and has Rocky there more as a supporting character. Both Michael and Sylvester do great jobs in their roles, especially Stallone who still manages to put great work in as Rocky. The story is great too as it gives us a glimpse into what happened to Apollo’s wife after his death and gives Adonis a much better backstory. It also has good fight scenes, an interesting opponent, and the supporting cast all hold the film up well.

Cons - If I have one complaint, it’s mostly just about how the issue with Adonis embracing the Creed name is handled. It just seems slightly off how at first he’s living the creed lifestyle (albeit briefly) in the beginning, then decides to go out on his own and then circles back around to it in the end. In my mind it just plays out a bit weird.

Final Score - 9/10

It’s still a really solid movie and a must see, but I will admit the first Rocky is still the best.

As I was writing this, I have just discovered that Legend is playing at a theatre on the other side of town. I’ll try for that on Tuesday, might do something before it though, keep your eyes open.

Until then, I’ll see you folks at the movies.
