Double Movie Review: Battle of the Sexes (2017) & American Made (2017)

Hello All,

I’m 2/4 on the new releases this week, so expect some catching up in the next few days. Strangely enough these two films are both based on true stories. One’s a tennis match for the ages, and the other one’s about drug smuggling. So without further ado, let’s get to it shall we?

Battle of the Sexes Review

Plot Summary - Based on the true story of the tennis match between female tennis champion Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and male tennis champion Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell)

Pros - Stone and Carell are great in their respective roles, and it helps that the script does a good job of not making light of either character and their motivations. The story is well told in a straightforward narrative and it’s a great character study.

Cons - If bio pics aren’t your thing, this will do nothing for you.

Final Score - 8/10

It’s a solid film for those who are willing to give it a try.

American Made Review

Plot Summary - Based on the true story of Barry Seal (Tom Cruise), an airline pilot who is recruited by the CIA to become a drug and gun runner for international cartels.

Pros - Cruise is great as Seal, clearly having a blast in the role. The story is well told, and especially detailed in the timeline as to how everything played out. It keeps the action up and the intensity throughout.

Cons - It doesn’t really feel like Seal has much of a character arc, but he still manages to be funny and charming so I suppose that balances it out slightly. And again if bio pics aren’t really your thing this might be better than average.

Final Score - 9/10

A fun romp of a film, it may not blow you away but it’s worth the ride.

Next: Flatliners - I hear it’s awful. Sounds like fun.
