Double Moive Review: Detroit (2017) & The Dark Tower (2017)

Hello All,

Today seems to be an opposites kind of day. On one hand we have the based on a true story Detroit, and the other is the fantasy film The Dark Tower. What do these films have in common? Almost nothing. So with that stalling done, let’s get on with it shall we?

Detroit Review

Plot Summary - Based on the 1967 Detroit Riots, it tells an adaptation of the true life Algiers Motel incident that took place during the riots.

Pros - I actually have a lot of praise for the film overall. The cast is great, as well as the pacing and the story overall. The characters are well developed, and the film does a tremendous job of showing all the sides of the story.

Cons - The story does this weird thing in the third act where, while the rest of the film jumped around between everyone else involved, it instead turns its focus mainly on one man for the remainder of it. I can kind of see why they did, I just thought it was a bit off at first.

Final Score - 10/10

Overall I highly recommend it. It’s a great film, and a sadly still relevant one especially in todays troubled times.

The Dark Tower Review

Plot Summary -  One year after the death of his father, Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor) starts having dreams about a tower, a man in black, and a gunslinger. When bad guys begin to circle Jake however, he finds a portal to another world, and finds his dreams are more real than he thinks.

Pros - Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey are a great hero and villain pairing. Tom Taylor as Jake manages to hold his own as well.

Cons - I got to be honest here, I saw this film yesterday at the time of writing this, and I can barely remember what happened. The character development is lacking to start, and the story, even at 95 minutes, feels padded and overall pointless. Most of the supporting characters are also never named and contribute nothing. If the film had been over two hours, it probably would’ve given me enough time to care, or hell make it a duel film or even a trilogy, I just don’t understand why anybody thought 95 minutes was long enough?

Final Score - 1/10

Only for fans of the books, and even then go in with a grain of salt.

Next: Girls Trip - Also expect the suggestion box review this week as well.
