Movie Review: The Skeleton Twins (2014) - Is it a bares bones kind of film? (Would you believe that was the best joke I could think of?)

(As always, SPOILER ALERT)

Well, I have to admit, after seeing Gone Girl; I kind of wanted to see a movie about something a little bit more normal. So I decided to go and see The Skeleton Twins, hoping that maybe I can get a few laughs out of it while watching something a bit more normal and calm like I said (even though I’ve been watching some movies in between for an upcoming post I’m working on). How did it go? Let’s find out.

Plot Summary – Twins Maggie and Milo (Played by Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader) are reunited after Milo attempts to commit suicide (I also just realized that this is the second film that starts like this that I’ve seen this year.) Together they attempt to reconcile their relationship while trying to sort out their personal problems along the way. Does the plot sound familiar at all?

Pros – Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader are great together in this, and it’s not surprising considering their SNL history together. I’d only seen Kristen Wiig from Bridesmaids (Yes I saw Bridesmaids shut up) and Bill Hader from his bit at the roast of James Franco (Is it weird I feel more embarrassed about watching the roast?) but their comedic presence and their dramatic moments are both really good in the film.

Cons – Remember when I said the plot might sound familiar? I’ve seen this kind of story play out time and time again on the big screen, but Kristen and Bill’s performances make for it. Also, the secondary characters are barely worth mentioning, but only because in films like this the only really exist to help create drama and to move the story along, and while it does have its funny moments in this I was kind of hoping for a bit more of it.

Final Score – 8/10

Bill and Kristen more than make up for the all too familiar story, and the movie itself is pretty good, but if you’re looking for something a bit different I can understand. Is this going to be in my year end top 10? Probably not, but it might get an honourable mention at least.

So if the review seems a bit short, I apologize, but I can only write so much based on what I get. Anyways my next review will most likely be Dracula Untold, although I’m not sure when it’ll be posted as I might be starting my new job this weekend I'm not yet sure, but I’ll be sure to get it posted when I can. As for the post after that, I’m working on something a bit different than usual for it, but I’m hoping it’ll be something you folks will like.

So until next time, I’ll see you guys at the movies.
