(Possible
SPOILER WARNING ahead.)
So this post is going to be different from my usual
ones in one slight way. This will be my first blog post to be posted
simultaneously on both Blogger and Tumblr. So for my Blogger fans aside from
this opening, things will be the same as usual (If you want to skip to the
review I’ll mark where it starts further down), and for anyone new to my blog
from Tumblr, welcome. I’ll bring you up to speed on how I tend to write my
reviews. First I’ll do an introductory statement, which usually involves
blabbing on about something related to the movie, then we get into the review
which is structured like so:
Plot Summary – Either a brief summary of upwards to
twenty minutes or so into the movie, or longer if it’s a movie I think it’s truly
awful like my TMNT review (The link I’ll post to here for Tumblr.)
Pros – Good Points about the film. Basically anything
I could like about a film including but not limited to actors, characters,
style, setting, etc.
Cons – Any problems I see with the film. So basically
anything I can like, I can also dislike.
Final Score – A final score of the film. I like to use
a scale of 1 – 10. 1 is a broken film, 10 is a masterpiece, and 5 is average.
If need be I can post a full list of scores.
Then they’ll be a brief wrap up and mention of what the
next main post might be about. I might post smaller things in the mean time
such as breaking news and other related things.
Now I want you to keep in mind one thing. Any final
score I give to a film is based entirely on my opinion of it. If you see a film
you like that I gave a bad score to, remember that it’s just my opinion. If you
like a film, or want to see a film anyways that I give a bad score too, I will
not mind at all. I am not here to change your mind; I’m here to offer one
opinion and that’s all. If you disagree with any review of mine, I want to know
why (keeping in mind I’ll only respond to civilized arguments, anyone who just
wants to scream at me that I’m wrong and that I’m an asshole will be simply
ignored.) That being said, I’m hoping it won’t come to that, and that we can
all get along. Cool? Cool.
Now, to begin the review
REVIEW STARTS HERE!!!!!!!
Does anyone else remember here when Tom Cruise was
awesome? Like when all he did was just star in awesome movies and we didn’t
care about his personal life? It feels like it’s been a while since we’ve seen
him in something truly excellent. Sure he’s had a couple good movies since all
that started, but he really hasn’t truly stood out in anything. Well, earlier
this year a movie came out starring Mr. Cruise called Edge of Tomorrow. Now you
may have seen it, you may have not (judging by how long it lasted in theatres I’m
guessing the former) but now it’s out on DVD, and is it worth picking up now
for those of you who haven’t seen it? Well let’s find out.
Plot Summary – In the near future, an alien race
called the mimics has crash landed on earth and has conquered most of Europe and
is expanding into the rest of the world, slaughtering the human race along the
way aside from one human victory at the city of Verdun made possible by Sergeant
Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt). As the human race, under the leadership of the
united defense force, prepares to mount one final assault into Europe. Major
William Cage (Tom Cruise) is a public media relations officer who is on his way
to meet UDF General Brigham. When Brigham attempts to send Cage to the
frontline to cover the battle, Cage attempts to get out of it by blackmailing
the General by threatening to use his public relations skills to turn the
public against him after the casualties will inevitably start mounting from the
battle. Instead, Major Cage is arrested, branded a deserter, and is sent to the
front lines as a soldier. During the battle, Cage kills an unusual looking
mimic, then is killed himself only to wake up back at the beginning of the previous
day while still being branded as a deserter. He finds that this happens every
time he dies, until he eventually finds Sgt. Vrataski on the battlefield and
explains to her what’s happening. She tells him to come find her next time he
resets, and when he does reset, they begin a plan to take down the mimic army
once and for all.
Pros – Tom Cruise is fantastic as the selfish arrogant
asshole (shocking no one) and Emily Blunt damn near steals the show as
Vrataski. I can easily see her doing more roles like that in the future. The
idea of the film and the execution of its also done excellently, as its kind of
both awesome and hilarious do see the different ways parts of the film play
out, as it keeps it from getting stale.
Cons – The ending, which I won’t spoil, might leave
some people perplexed if they’re not really thinking about the logic of the
movie. Suffice to say, it makes sense if you think about it. (If there are
requests for it, I’ll make a post explaining it.)
Final Score – 9/10
If you don’t get confused by the ending, it’s an
awesome thrill ride all the way through.
Now I do want to explain one thing. Even though this
is a DVD review, since the film was released theatrically this year as well, it
can still qualify for the year end top ten list (which I’ve started compiling)
so don’t be surprised if this is on there. I might do another DVD review before
Friday but if I don’t expect a review of Fury and maybe The Book of Life as
well.
So until then, I’ll see you guys at the movies.
