(Spoiler Free) Movie Review: Batman Vs Superman Dawn of Justice (2016)

Hello All,

Okay, I got to be honest, I was sort of not looking forward to this one. On top of not enjoying Man of Steel, I’m not the biggest Zack Snyder fan. I’ll give him credit for 300 and Watchmen, but everything else from him for me as ranged meh to completely puzzling. I’m also not a big DC fan and with everything that had been going on around the movie it honestly looked like a disaster. The trailers didn’t do it any justice except for maybe the final one, and the ratings on Rotten Tomatoes always raises a big red flag for me.

So, with all that in mind going in, how did I feel about it when it was over? Let’s find out together shall we?

Plot Summary - Taking place 18 months after the events of Man of Steel, Superman (Henry Cavill) finds himself admired as both a hero and a villain by the masses. This has caught the eye of Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) AKA the Batman, who makes a plan to bring down the Man of Steel, but as it not as it seems along the way.

Pros - Brace yourself folks, I might give you guys a heart attack: Ben Affleck is really good as Bruce Wayne/Batman, and Jesse Eisenberg is even better as Lex Luthor. Like they are two of my favorite things about this film. Jeremy Irons as Alfred is brilliant fucking casting, and Gal Gadot is actually quite good as Wonder Woman. Alright? So can we all fucking calm down about it, internet? Okay? See what happened again? You got all worked up over nothing. Moving on, the plot is interesting as it does have both some really good dramatic and comedic moments, the best comedic moment easily going to Martha Kent of all people. The cinematography and world building is interesting too, as the beginning of the film actually manages to work in Bruce Wayne being in Metropolis during the events of Man of Steel pretty seamlessly. In the beginning the film does manage to get off to a pretty interesting if slow start, and it even manages to tell Bruce Wayne origin story in an interesting way….mostly. The actual fight between the two heroes is also really well done.

Cons - After the first third, the plot kind of falls apart a bit. It relies alot on coincidences and a surprising amount of dumb luck. Lex Luthor, as interesting as he is, has a plan in this movie that kind of relies on a lot of chance. The few really good moments there are once again stuck between long scenes of build up, granted there’s a lot less exposition in this film than it’s predecessor. There are some very obvious cgi moments, and the final fight scene with all three of the main heroes is kind of a weirdly bright and hard to follow mess. The ending (which I won’t spoil) is also massively dumb as hell, and it honestly makes me really want to just kind of say fuck you to the film.

Final Score - 4/10

It’s not a complete disaster of a film, it’s just a massive letdown. If you’re looking for just a simple thrill ride at the movies you’ll be happy, but on a critical level it just doesn’t cut it.

Next: I have no fucking clue. Maybe something from Netflix.
